Thunderstorms expected on Sept 30: IMD

MAPUSA

The weather department officials said no large change in rainfall activity is expected over Goa in days ahead, except for some thunderstorms at isolated places in the next few days.

While a yellow alert has been sounded for September 30, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said rainfall activity is not going to be anything significant.

“For next two days, there will be isolated activity with one or two places expected to get rains. Thunderstorms with lightning are very likely to take place at isolated places over North and South Goa on September 30,” said Rahul Mohan, senior scientist with the IMD, Goa.

Although the normal date for withdrawal of southwest monsoon in Goa is October 14, the State has been experiencing sparse to no rains in the last couple of days.

According to the IMD official, there were no significant systems developing for any heavy rainfall activity to take place in days to come.

“There could be a system forming over the Bay of Bengal but that will not have any significant impact over Goa. There is also a cyclonic circulation about to form around October 1 which may have some impact over the west coast and which may result in thunderstorm activity. But there will be no heavy rainfall or widespread activity,” Mohan said.

The State has followed the overall trend in the country with above normal rainfall activity reported in September.

Till September 27, the State has received an area weighted average rainfall of 335 mm which is 15 percent higher than normal for the period.
