Focus on their individualized treatment

PANAJI

Three top consultants from the Gastrointestinal Oncology unit of the famed Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, recently collaborated with doctors at the Goa Medical College and reviewed the treatment plans of over two dozen patients.

The Mumbai cancer hospital is hand-holding the GMC's Oncology department under a deal the State government inked with it some two years ago.

According to Health Minister Vishwajit Rane, the treatment plans of some 28 patients with various gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary malignancies were discussed by these senior consultants from Tata Memorial and doctors from the GMC with a focus on individualized treatment.

"The discussions were not only enriching for our medical team but also immensely beneficial for the patients, who gained access to expert guidance," Rane said.

The consultants also delivered lectures at the GMC with Medical Oncologist Dr Vikas Ostwal holding forth on the concepts of chemotherapy in gastrointestinal oncology and Surgical Oncologist Dr Muffadal Kazi on the principles of onco-surgery in gastrointestinal malignancies.

The third Tata Memorial consultant, Dr Vikram Chaudhari delivered a lecture on onco-surgery in hepatobiliary cancers.

This interaction highlighted the importance of collaboration in enhancing patient outcomes and advancing oncology.

GMC set up the Oncology super-speciality department over five years ago and its progress is being monitored by the Mumbai hospital famed for its cancer diagnostics, treatment and also research.

Doctors and nurses from the GMC are regularly sent to Mumbai where they undergo intense training in cancer care and treatment under watchful eyes of top doctors there.
