Traffic dept's tough advisory on minors driving vehicles

PANAJI

The Traffic Department has reiterated its warning of initiating legal action against vehicle owners, who give their bikes or cars to minors.

In less than 20 days, Goa reported two cases wherein underage drivers at Chicalim and Vasco were involved in fatal accidents.

"For underage driving, a fine of Rs 5,000 is imposed upon the driver/rider and an additional fine of Rs 5,000 is imposed on the owner for allowing an unauthorized person to drive/ride his/her vehicle," Traffic SP Bossuet Silva informed.

In the two cases where the owners are booked for the offence and minors sent to Apna Ghar, the department has also sent reports to the concerned Assistant Director of Transport for cancellation of the registration of the motor vehicle used by the minor in the commission of the offense.

The minor drivers are now not eligible to obtain Learner’s Licence or Driving Licence until they attain the age of 25 years.
