As extreme temperatures persist, Goa is likely to experience two heatwave (days) between April and June, influenced by an increased frequency of above-normal heatwave days across various regions including the south peninsula, central India, east India, and the plains of northwest India.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Goa issued an alert on Tuesday, along with advisory measures to stay safe from intense summer heat.
The advisory highlights the probability of above-normal heatwave days from April to June, particularly affecting regions such as the south peninsula, central India, east India, and the plains of northwest India. “For Goa state, 0-2 heatwave days are likely to occur in April 2024,” it added.
Goa is expected to continue experiencing above-normal temperatures, with maximum temperatures in April projected to surpass the normal range of 33-34 degrees Celsius for both North and South Goa districts. Similarly, minimum temperatures are forecasted to be above the normal range of 26-27 degrees Celsius.
The heatwave criteria for Goa state (Coastal station) indicate a maximum temperature departure of 4.5°C or more from the normal, with a heatwave described when the actual maximum temperature reaches 37°C or higher.
The Directorate of Health Services on Monday issued a health advisory to the general public to stay safe from the heat by staying hydrated even if not thirsty, wearing loose cotton garments, staying indoors, especially from 12 noon to 3 pm, and avoiding strenuous outdoor activities during afternoon hours, etc.
