MAPUSA
Two shops were gutted in a fire incident that took place along the busy St Xavier’s College road at Ganeshpuri, Mapusa late Saturday night.
One was a laundry shop while the other of stationery. Both the owners had closed their shops and had retired for the night.
Mapusa fire station personnel rushed to the site soon after receiving the fire call but could not begin firefighting operations because of high tension electricity lines running in front of the shops.
The Mapusa fire fighters began their operation as soon as the power department cut off supply in the area.
A fire tender from Porvorim also assisted in the operation.
According to a fire officer, the shops suffered a loss of around Rs 25 lakh in the fire incident.
The cause of fire is suspected to be short circuit but investigations are on.
