The Union Ministry for Housing and Urban Affairs has sanctioned 500 houses to Goa under its ambitious Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban’s second phase (PMAY-U) 2.0. Under the first phase, a total 3,146 houses were constructed and handed over to the beneficiaries.
The Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar informed Lok Sabha that the government has sanctioned little over six lakh houses to 29 states and UTs under PMAY 2.0 and another one lakh houses will be sanctioned once the remaining seven states and UTs sign agreements with the housing ministry.
Smaller states and UTs such as Goa, Sikkim and Andaman & Nicobar Islands have got sanctions for 500 units each, as on December 2, 2024.
The central government has launched the second phase of the scheme to finance housing for 1 crore urban poor and middle-class families and economically disadvantaged groups (EWS) in metropolitan regions in September. A financial subsidy of Rs 2.50 lakh would be provided to new houses that the government intends to develop under PMAY 2.0 in five years.
Since the inception of the scheme on June 25, 2015, aimed to provide pucca houses in urban areas across the country, a total 3,146 houses were sanctioned and constructed in Goa.
As per the data, for the financial year 2015-16, total five houses were sanctioned and in 2016-17, the number went up to ten.
The Ministry said that PMAY-U is a demand-driven scheme and the sanctions are based on the proposals submitted by the States and UTs.
In 2017-18, Centre sanctioned 100 houses for Goa, while in 2018-19, 392 houses were approved and 424 in the subsequent year. In 2020-21, as many as 1,576 houses got approved and in 2021-22, total 309 and 2022-23, another 330 were sanctioned.
State did not move any proposal during the last financial year 2023-24.
The scheme is implemented through four verticals “ Beneficiary Led Construction (BLC), Affordable Housing in Partnership (AHP), In-Situ Slum Redevelopment (ISSR) and Credit Linked Subsidy Scheme (CLSS). Under PMAY-U, the selection of beneficiaries under BLC/AHP/ISSR verticals is done by respective state/UTs as per scheme guidelines.
