Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Damodar Kaskar has claimed that almost all issues of the Vasco fish market vendors have been resolved, as a large number of fish wholesalers operating at Kharewado had closed down their business following a notice by the MMC chief officer.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Kaskar said major issues like identification and survey of Vasco fish vendors had been accomplished.
"We have also given them vendor cards and ID cards, besides taking them to the new shed that had been built for their temporary business. The vendors are happy with arrangements for them in the temporary shed.”
“They had earlier put forth one major demand to shut down the sales of fish wholesalers and that has now been achieved after we sent notices to everyone to stop sale of fish outside as we have a dedicated fish market in Vasco,” said Kaskar.
Meanwhile, Custodio Dsouza, president of the traditional fishermen association, demanded that wholesalers be banned from sale of fish on a permanent basis and should not be granted any license to sell fish.
"We are glad that wholesalers have stopped operating but we have seen how they have stopped for a few days, only to start again. This should be a permanent solution and while many wholesalers are planning to apply for a license to sell fish, the MMC must refrain from giving any such licences and approvals to them.”
“We have seen a fisheries department vehicle selling fish and this vehicle must also come under municipal laws. The vehicle must be shifted out of Vasco City limits as well," said D’Souza.
