Even as the Varca panchayat has set in motion the work of restoration of the sand dune destroyed to make way for a road to the beach, questions are being raised in local circles how the authorities will go about the job of identifying the culprits and penalizing them for the illegal act.
The Colva police as well as the flying squad had rushed to the Pedda-Varca on Tuesday after the village witnessed an uproar over the destruction of the sand dune to make way for a road.
When the Colva police was asked to shed light on the question of initiating criminal action against the accused persons involved in the illegal sand dune cutting, sources at the Colva police station informed that the police would act only after receiving a report from the flying squad and the concerned authorities.
“Till Wednesday evening, the police have not received any report from the Flying squad or any other authority over the sand dune destruction. The police would register a FIR against the concerned persons after receiving a report or complaint from the concerned authority or the flying squad”, informed a senior Colva police officer.
While villagers pointed out that while the Varca village panchayat has moved with alacrity to restore the sand dune, they, however, have questioned over the delay by the flying squad or the authorities to file a police complaint with the Colva police to initiate criminal proceedings against the guilty.
