GU has immense potential to become centre of excellence for education: President

President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday said that the State’s sole varsity- Goa University has immense potential to become a centre of excellence for education, research and innovation.

The President was speaking while addressing the 34th Convocation ceremony of Goa University at Raj Bhavan. Total 9,290 students were conferred with graduation degree, 1,859 with post-graduation degree, 116 diplomas and 61 Research Scholars were bestowed Doctorate Degree.

Murmu hailed the performance of girl students as she noted that 55 per cent of degree holders and 60 percent of the gold medallists are girls.

The President was happy to note that Goa University is promoting innovation. She emphasised that developing world-class competence in areas such as Artificial Intelligence and Data Science in our higher educational institutions is essential.

The President noted that various schools have been formed in the campus of Goa University to encourage interdisciplinary studies by integrating different departments, which is in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

“University has immense potential to become a centre of excellence for education, research and innovation,” she said as she noted that the Varsity has inculcated sensitivity about social inclusion and environmental balance among the students.

The President was happy to note that the Goa University has adopted five villages under the ‘Unnat Bharat Abhiyan’ where mussels and mushrooms are being cultivated by adopting the sustainability model.

She said that today’s youth will build a developed India in the ‘Sankalp Kaal’. She expressed confidence that they will fulfill the dream of taking India towards greater prosperity.

Earlier speaking, Goa Governor and Chancellor PS Sreedharan Pillai said that the Varsity is in process of signing MoUs with many foreign countries on new courses to further develop the education sector.

Stating that Goa University is one among those few Universities that has implemented NEP 2020, the Governor said that NEP brings in a much-needed flexibility in education with students being given a host of options. “Education is no longer a one-size-fits-all package. Instead, students have the flexibility in choosing subjects across disciplines, with a focus on skill,” he said.
