Voicing strong concerns over the Major Port Authorities (MPA) Bill, the Goa Fishing Boat Owners Association (GFBOA) on Wednesday said the marking of port limits on the draft Coastal Zone Management Plan (CZMP) would dislodge fishing villages in the State.
"The MPA Bill will have the worst consequence on our fishing villages. The fishing communities will be severely affected and will be in trouble. Many have already begun contacting me,” said GFBOA President Jose Philip D'Souza, while speaking to reporters.
“The Central government have not taken people into confidence. Many people are still unaware, and by the passing of such laws, and including such sections, we wonder if the government is attempting to take away the rights of the fishermen," said D’Souza.
D’Souza said there were concerns as St Jacinto Island could also be included in the MPT jurisdiction.
"St Jacinto Island is a spot for tourists but above all, it is the only island inhabited only by the fishing community, with strict rules that not even an inch of the land can be sold to outsiders. This is one reason why the island is still in the hands of locals.”
“We have heard that the Central government wants to acquire this island and hand it over to MPT. This island belongs to locals and we also have a Church there where we offer prayers. If this island is being planned for acquisition, the government will invite the wrath of all people, especially the fishermen," warned D’Souza.
"We fishermen will not remain silent and the State could face one of the biggest revolts soon. Just because Goans have been patient and tolerant, it does not mean that the government can take them lightly and promote anti-people proposals and projects.”
“If the government wants to keep people in the dark and go ahead with such plans, they will be doing a big mistake. The time has come for all 40 MLAs to step forward and protect the interests of people in Goa" added D’Souza.
