Won't allow Bainguinim waste plant to become reality: Cumbarjua MLA

PANAJI

Cumbarjua MLA Rajesh Faldessai once again reiterated his opposition to the Bainguinim waste treatment plant and vowed that he would not allow the project to come up at the site at any cost.
Faldessai made the statement while reacting to Waste Management Minister Babush Monserrate's statement that the waste plant was the need of the hour and that tender for the same would be floated in two months.
“There are about 2,000 flats in the vicinity of the site with 6,000-7,000 people staying. Besides that, there are the churches of Old Goa, mutt, schools, hospitals, Carambolim lake, which will be destroyed if the plant is allowed to come up at the site. So, we want that the plant be shifted and taken elsewhere where there is no habitation,” Faldessai informed.
“I will stand by my people till the very end, which is why I will never allow the plant to come up there. Any Minister speaking in favour of this plant should first come here and then decide,” Faldessai said.
When questioned by The Goan whether he had written to the Waste Management Minister regarding conducting an inspection of the site, Faldessai said, “I have already written to the Minister but have yet to get any reply.”
To another statement of Monserrate that he has become an MLA now and that the plant was proposed during the regime of the earlier MLA, Faldessai shot back, “Monserrate has also become a Waste Management Minister now. And it should not matter when the project was proposed. What matters now is that I am the MLA of the constituency and I will stand by my people in opposing the plant at any cost.”
