With just a few days left for the South West Monsoons to set in the State, the PWD, Sewerage has finally started the work of opening sewage chambers in Margao to remove blockages.
The Goan had earlier this week highlighted how sewage chambers resemble water fountains during the monsoons due to a large-scale infiltration of rainwater.
A senior PWD official supervising the work of clearing the chambers of the waste and blockages said the work has been initiated given that many a sewage chamber had witnessed backflow of sewage water during the monsoons.
“We are trying to find out by opening the sewage chambers whether the fault lies in the blockages or something else. We have so far cleared around 39 manholes in the city. The process will continue for the next few days,” he said.
Sources pointed out that the PWD should try to find out the source of rainwater infiltration into the underground line. “Removing the blockages from the sewage chambers is a step in the right direction. But, the PWD and Sewerage Infrastructure Development Corporation of Goa Ltd, should also find out how rainwater infiltrates into the underground line,” another official pointed out.
