Cortalim MLA Anton Vas on Friday launched the long-awaited project of laying a new 900 mm diameter water pipeline at Sancoale to improve water supply issues in the Cortalim constituency.
Speaking to reporters in the presence of ward panch Nidhi Naik and PWD officials, Vas said the project has been taken at a cost of Rs 30 crore and would be completed by May.
"This is a very important project for the Cortalim constituency and also for the entire Mormugao Taluka in general. Cortalim constituency suffers a lot of water supply crisis and people have been demanding a proper water supply for so many years,” said Vas.
“This new water pipeline will improve the water supply in the surrounding areas of Zuarinagar, Cortalim and even Quelossim. We had a reservoir of 10 lakh litre capacity and we had proposed an additional reservoir of a higher capacity.”
“Work on the 20 lakh litre reservoir is going on and these pipelines will be connected to the reservoir that will change the entire water supply scenarios in the constituency.”
Senior PWD Engineer Vishwambar Bhende said the water pipeline will not only benefit Cortalim but also improve the water supply situation in the entire Mormugao taluka.
"With rising development, the demand for water supply increases and we have taken steps to upgrade the infrastructure to meet the rising demands. The infrastructure upgradation steps start right from Selaulim from where we get our water supply,” said Bhende.
“We have two water plants of 280 MLD capacity which are being upgraded to hold another 100 MLD capacity. Secondly, the water pipeline from Margao to Verna is old and is being replaced. We are also increasing the capacity of our reservoir in Cortalim from 10,000 cubic metres to 20,000 cubic metres.”
“Besides this 900 mm diameter water pipeline at Sancoale, we are also laying another additional water pipeline on the other side of Zuarinagar and the works are ongoing. Once all this is connected, the water situation will improve by almost three times and benefit not only Cortalim but the entire Mormugao taluka," said Bhende.
