Work to erect crash barriers begins at Karmalghat

CANACONA

Work to erect crash barriers at the dangerous and accident-prone curve at Karmalghat began on Wednesday, about 10 days after a 23-year youth from Mumbai had died after his vehicle was involved in a mishap at the treacherous curve.

With traffic proceeding with great caution at the narrow and sharp curve, queues of vehicles have been witnessed on a daily basis, prompting some politicians and social activists to demand regulation of traffic by police.

“Till the time the sharp curve is made safe for motorists, policemen should regulate the traffic to cross over on either side, in order to stop traffic jams and also avoid mishaps in the area,” said Canacona Municipal Council Chairperson Ramakant Naikgaunkar.

Congress leader Janardhan Bhandari had also demanded police presence from morning to evening to regulate the traffic.

Some police personnel were seen only for a day on Tuesday, but no policemen presence was noticed on Wednesday, even as the works were underway to erected crash-barriers at the site.
