The strong presence of Goan candidates in the Swindon Council elections has been welcomed within the Goan community in Swindon.
Fr Lucas Rodrigues, sfx, Parish Priest of St Peter’s RC Church, Swindon and Goan Chaplain of the Swindon Goan Chaplaincy, said it was good that many Goans have shown keen interest in the local political scene at Swindon in recent years.
“Wishing them the very best and pray that they work with dedication with positive energy for the common good. Addressing issues pertaining to the Goan community, as well as the wider community, is vital,” said Fr Rodrigues.
Added Zico Fernandes, newly-elected president of Goan Swindon Association: “We are happy to know that Goans are coming forward as leaders to represent their locality and getting involved in local issues which, in itself, is a sense of great achievement for our Goans.”
“There is a general feeling among Goans in Swindon that having Goans as representatives in local government bodies will make easier for the thousands requiring help or assistance in various issues and the Goan community in at large.”
“With many Goans contesting elections in the Swindon Council, the Goan community will benefit.”
