Fisheries Minister Nilkant Halarnkar on Saturday said that a lot of people from outside come to Goa for work and since their antecedents are not known a sense of insecurity prevails among the locals and especially among the senior citizens who live alone in their homes.
Halarnkar also said that there are good officers in Goa Police who have been doing an excellent job by cracking down on serious crimes in the State.
“A lot of people come to Goa for work and since we do not know them there is a sense of insecurity among the locals, especially the senior citizens. Police have to visit every home and provide safety and security to the citizens,” Halarnkar said.
The Fisheries Minister was addressing a gathering at a special celebration programme for senior citizens on the occasion of 75th anniversary of India’s Independence organised by Mapusa SDPO at Colvale.
DGP Jaspal Singh, IGP, Omvir Singh, North SP, Shobit Saxena and other senior police officers and guests were also present. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant who was initially supposed to attend the programme had to cancel his schedule due to other engagements.
Continuing, Halarnkar said Goa Police’s unique initiative “ ‘Samadhan’ “ was a brilliant effort to keep in touch with the senior citizens and resolve their problems through interaction.
“With this initiative, a sense of confidence will develop among the senior citizens and the fear within them will go. The Samadhan initiative will go a long way to help the senior citizens,” he said.
Goa Police launched the Samadhan initiative around three months back where senior citizens can come to the police station every Saturday and interact with senior police officers and discuss their grievances and find a solution to the problem.
DGP Jaspal Singh informed that data analysis has proved that senior citizens were easy targets for criminals and therefore a senior citizen cell has been set up at the police station.
“We need to take care of the senior citizens who have given their best life in raising their children as good citizens. For various reasons, senior citizens are left alone at home. Many times they cannot purchase medicines or go to the market or cannot ride a vehicle. That is the time they should keep in touch with the beat constable,” Singh said.
He said during the Covid pandemic the senior citizens suffered the most as they could not go to the market or buy medicines.
“That’s the time the beat officers can help you. At times, since police is a busy department, the officers may not be able to attend to you. But if at any time you need emergency help you can call up the number 1090 and the assistance will be at your doorstep,” he said.
The Mapusa SDPO Jivba Dalvi informed that the Mapusa Police sub-division will give greeting cards to senior citizens on Independence Day on Aug 15 and will continue the practice of giving such greeting cards to them at the festivals of Ganesh Chaturthi, Diwali and other occasions.
The senior citizens were treated with a sing-song session and even a magic show during the programme. National flags were also distributed to all the senior citizens.
