Goa police not cooperating, says Hyderabad police chief; DGP Jaspal counters they were not serious

PANAJI

Goa Police has found itself in a tight situation after the Telangana Police accused the former of not cooperating with a drug nexus case.

"There's nothing to hide. I am openly conveying to the Goa Police that you'll are not cooperating with us," Hyderabad City Police Commissioner C V Anand said at a press briefing in Hyderabad on Thursday.

The Goan reached out to Director General of Goa Police Jaspal Singh for a comment. He retorted saying, "He (Anand) or his officers never spoke to either me or any senior officers. What is the use of saying so now? If Hyderabad Police were serious they should have escalated the matter."

Anand said that while their team managed to nab Borkar in Goa, Edwin Nunes was untraceable and Goa Police's response was nil. "In the ongoing probe into Sonali Phogat's death, Edwin Nunes' name surfaced. We came to know they are drug suppliers and peddlers. Our communication with Goa Police yielded negative result" he said.

DGP Singh reiterated his claim that his counterparts did not approach either him, IGP or SP. "I agree that at times Police Station level personnel do not extend the requisite assistance, and this happens not only in Goa but everywhere. In such a case if we don't get assistance, we definitely speak to senior officers. Saying so, post facto is immaterial when one doesn't explore all options of getting assistance," the officer told The Goan.

While Hyderabad police said they are working to find the root cause of the problem of drug menace, Goa Police is entangled in a series of controversies in the wake of Phogat's mysterious murder and suspected drug overdose, another overdose death of a Puducherry student and Borkar's arrest for alleged drugs peddling.

Goa Police Chief emphasised that the department is committed to zero tolerance to drugs. "We are serious and working tirelessly in the war against drugs," he said.
