The criminal case filed by Goa police against Captain Viriato Fernandes in the  historic Chandor midnight agitation on November 1-2 in the year 2020 came in handy for the INDIA Alliance to drive home the point that Congress candidate has a proven track record of fighting for the cause of Goa and Goans.

In his affidavit, Captain Viriato made a mention of the criminal case registered against him by the Maina Curtorim police for participating in the historic Chandor agitation when thousands of people from across Goa had poured into the historic village to register their protest against track doubling and to make Goa a coal hub.

Addressing workers of the INDIA Alliance, GPCC President Amit Patkar said he is proud to say that the Congress has given a candidate who had fought alongside the people to save the state from destruction. “When Captain Viriato had gone out to save Goa from becoming a coal hub, the Modi government and the Pramod Sawant government had filed a criminal case against  him. We are all  proud that our candidate has a proven record of taking up issues dear to the hearts of Goans”, Patkar said.

Opposition leader Yuri Alemao said Congress party has given a candidate who had fought for Goa even before  he and others became MLAs of the Goa Legislative Assembly. “The BJP government must have filed the criminal case against Viriato and others to silence their voice during the anti-coal agitation to bring about a revolution in the state”, Yuri added.
