Lavoo Mamledar is the only cop who has managed to dethrone apolitician in the State, when he defeated former Home Minister, Ravi Naik inPonda in the 2012 Assembly elections.
Coming from a background of a disciplined force Lavoo hastaken it up as a mission to clear Ponda of its garbage mess.
“The Ponda Municipal Council is not capable of clearinggarbage piled up across Ponda,” Lavoo said.
He has hired two trucks, an excavator and employed 16labourers to rid the town of its garbage and has been spending from his ownpocket. The goodwill mission costs the MLA almost around Rs 10,000 to 15,000per day, he said.
“We have started in earnest to clean the town. Money issecondary. Garbage is a huge problem in Ponda. All the nallahs, storm waterdrains and lanes are choked with plastic waste. All this needs to go,” aconcerned Mamledar said.
The former DySP turned MLA is also concerned about theunemployment and wants to attract investments in Ponda.
“Ponda has huge potential but we have only one company,namely MRF here. We need bigger industries that will be willing to come toPonda. Ponda also has the potential to be a transport hub,” Lavoo said.
The MLA has been working hard to identify a garbage disposalsite for Ponda since the PMC has no permanent garbage dump. He is also workingovertime to complete the paperwork for construction of Khanderpar Bridge thatwill reduce the distance to neighbouring Valpoi.
Lavoo also dreams to be first in Goa to provide state of theart flyovers in Ponda that will ease the traffic congestion.
“The citizens need to be shown how to make use of pavementsand sidewalks so that they avoid blocking traffic on roads. I will organizetraining and awareness programmes in Ponda to inculcate traffic sense anddiscipline among the people,” Lavoo said.
