The Goa government has constituted review and representation committees to recommend officers who are of doubtful integrity or ineffective to compulsorily retire from service in public interest.
The Personnel Department has asked all the departments to evaluate the performance of employees aged 50-55 years or who have completed 30 years of service that qualify for pension.
This may be a good step to sieve wheat from the chaff so that only the efficient employees will be retained. The vacancy created could be filled by qualified educated youngsters under the promised 10,000 jobs and help bring down the unemployment rate.
The yardstick of compulsory retirement should be applied to politicians and bureaucrats who continue to be in office, stick to their chairs or look for new positions in the government even after the age of 60+ years.
These government employees are paid salaries and obtain pension and other benefits like any others. Many a times, ripe old persons are foisted upon the citizens and given lucrative assignments with large pay packets and perks, by Central and State governments.
The governments need to know that no one in this world is indispensable so as to be re-employed after a certain age. Banish aged politicians to the ‘island of margdarshan,’ from where they can get a ringside view of the daily affairs of the country!
