Don’t reject ten rupee coins


Certain things don't seem to have a reason or explanation. One such thing is the non-acceptance of the ten rupee coin in Goa. This coin issued by the Reserve Bank of India is legal tender but in Goa it is an untouchable thing.

The shopkeepers and vendors don't accept it. Give it to a beggar and he says "Saab note dena". Nobody tells why. I asked a couple of shopkeepers and their reply was "we don't take because others don't take from us". At long last, I found a small sweets shop in Mapusa which has hung a small board "we accept ten rupee coins". That is the right attitude, I say. 

But unless more shopkeepers and vendors change their mind, the non-acceptance of ten rupee coin will remain a mystery in Goa.
