Goans must maintain communal harmony

Of late there have been reports of communal tension not only across the country but also in our own State.

Some disgruntled elements have been raising the issue of the title of Goencho Saib for St Francis Xavier.

The government has announced that it will rebuild temples demolished by Portuguese. There were also forts, churches, temples and mosques destroyed by different rulers earlier. So in a secular country the government should rebuild all and not only temples.

Some disgruntled people want to make Goa Files to show that there were only Hindu freedom fighters who were killed and atrocities committed on them.

Are these people saying that there were no Catholic or Muslim freedom fighters fighting the Portuguese regime? Surely, there will be many if we go through history.

So saying only Hindus have fought to liberate Goa is absolutely wrong as they are doing so to give a communal colour to the liberation of Goa.

The government instead of raking up communal issues should focus on development and work for the benefit of the underprivileged.
