Rent-a-bike service is an unmitigated nuisance. Goa can do without this nuisance. Young tourists, out to paint the town red after consuming large quantities of alcohol, zoom around on powerful bikes, endangering their lives and those of others.
However, rent-a-bike addresses the transport issues of tourists to some extent, as they cannot avail of cheap Ola and Uber taxis, which they are accustomed to, elsewhere in the country.
But the bikes are undoubtedly a menace. Hence I suggest that instead of doing away with rent-a-bike completely, electric bikes may be permitted. Locals may be given loans at confessional rates. This will prove to be a win-win proposition for all stake holders.
