The recent assault on social activist Rama Kankonkar in Caranzalem, that too in broad daylight, shows how badly Goa’s law and order has broken down. The police, though empowered to prevent such incidents, have failed to do their duty.
Apart from assaults, crimes like robberies and the unchecked availability of drugs are tarnishing Goa’s reputation as a safe tourist destination. Land grabbing by the real estate mafia also continues openly, right under the nose of the authorities.
Roads across Goa are in such poor condition that accidents during the monsoons have already claimed lives. Newspapers have also highlighted how garbage is carelessly dumped in many areas, creating serious sanitation problems.
Equally worrying is the pollution of water bodies, especially lakes, due to the inaction of the Goa State Pollution Control Board. If urgent corrective steps are not taken, it may not be wrong to say that Goa could soon be pushed under President’s Rule.
