The Minister for Panchayats and Transport says the Goa government will regularise illegal houses built on government and private land. But who is Mauvin to decide that houses built illegally by migrants should be legalised? People come from outside Goa and build houses wherever they like. Does Goa belong only to Mauvin? He talks as if he owns the state. If he wants to act above the law, then why do we even need courts to handle land issues?
If the government plans to legalise illegal structures, why are Goans required to get multiple approvals from the Panchayat and other departments for building houses? Why should there be one rule for outsiders and another for locals?
This seems to be vote bank politics, with elections coming up. The High Court says one thing, and the government does something else. It shows the law-and-order system is weakening. In India, laws seem to change depending on the mood of the politicians. After elections, the same government will likely start demolishing illegal houses again to create drama. It’s hard to understand what the Goa government is trying to do.
