The State could well get a new government-run medical college in South Goa district in the near future. Prime Minister Narendra Modi reportedly said that the country will get a record number of doctors in the next ten years due to the central government’s policy of establishing at least one medical college in every district.
It is a fact that there is a pressing need for several doctors in order to attend to the sick people, especially in the rural areas. The need for more doctors was severely felt during the pandemic.
The number of citizens affected by the Delta virus last year put a huge burden on the medical fraternity and the shortage of doctors was felt across the country.
This has proven that the country is very much in need of more doctors. However India was praised the world over by the way in which it tackled the pandemic despite several constraints.
According to the Prime Minister “the goal of having at least one medical college in every district and ensuring that medical education was in reach of everyone will result in the country getting a record number of doctors after 10 years”.
With two medical colleges in Goa, more students will get access to medical education and the State will produce more doctors and their number will contribute to the number of doctors in the country as per the vision of the Prime Minister.
The Goa government needs to start planning to have a medical college in South Goa district at the earliest so that more Goans get access to medical education.
