According to the teachings and beliefs of the Catholic Church, the souls of those who, after death, are not cleansed and are burdened with the guilt of venial sins must undergo purification in Purgatory before they can enter into the bliss and joys of heaven. This view does not differ very much from the teachings of other Indian religions like Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism, where the soul, instead of going to Purgatory, goes on from life to life till the karma is annihilated and the transmigration (Samsara) ends, after which the soul attains eternal bliss. How long the purification takes is not known, but according to the Catholic Church, the duration can be shortened, and sufferings alleviated, by the prayers of the faithful on earth and indulgences granted by the Church. All in all, it remains a matter of faith as to what really happens to the soul after death. However, the Church sets aside November 2 as ‘All Souls’ Day’ ” a day of special prayer and remembrance for the departed souls.
