Govt’s panel blames Sattari landslides on deforestation - The Goan Everyday - August 10, 2024. The authorities seem to have finally woken up to reality, promising some action to save the environment. The government appointed committee has observed that the three landslides at Sattari occurred not just due to heavy rains but due to deforestation. It is good to note that the CM has directed that development activities on the hills that could endanger the villages will be halted immediately.
Yes, it’s time authorities across the country, note that weakening the hills is a threat to life. The committee’s observation that deforestation in Sattari allowed water to intrude deep into the hills and this saturation weakened the soil, ultimately triggering the landslide, must be taken seriously. So, it has taken the Wayanad disaster and couple of disastrous incidents in Goa to wake up the authorities. But, better late than never. Let’s remember, you cannot fight nature, we need to embrace nature.
