State needs permanent no motor zones

It is learnt that after a gap of two years the fourth edition of ‘NoMoZo’ (No Motor Zone) is being organized at Porvorim on February 26. The much-awaited community festival will be witnessed on a 2-km stretch of the road. ‘NoMoZo’ should be held in other cities of the State as well and needs to become an annual feature. This is essential in order to send the message that we need to engage in non-motorized forms of transport due to its numerous advantages. The increase in the motorization rate is linked to external negative factors such as air pollution, congestion, and accidents. People should increasingly use bicycles for travel. It will restore and maintain their physical and mental well being. Non-motorized transport in the form of walking, cycling and cycle rickshaws plays an important role in Indian cities. Car-free days can unlock a whole new approach to movement and mobility since on most days our city streets are clogged with motorized traffic. Given the numerous advantages associated with non-motorized transport It would be prudent to have certain roads declared no-motor zones on a permanent basis.
