Apropos to Dr Francisco Colaco’s piece “Those Wonderful GPs: Where have they gone?” (The Goan Everyday, February 19). This nostalgic piece serves as a reminder that these fancy medical degrees and super-specialists working in state-of-the-art corporate hospitals have created a void that GPs used to fill. General practitioners or family physicians were our go-to-doctors who decided what was best for us. If they felt that they could not give their patients proper treatment or their patients were not responding to their treatment, they referred their patients to big hospitals. We followed our family physician's instructions. We trusted them. We were in safe hands. Now we go by Dr Google first. Technology has empowered us to do more research. But, at what cost? That said, I would like thank Dr Francisco Colaco for an eye-opening piece that forces us to pause and think whether more is always good or we should feel content with less sometimes.
