The message of Christmas is simply the message of peace, love and goodwill, spread all over the world every Christmas, to celebrate the birth of the universal Saviour Jesus Christ, the prince of peace, who entered the world by becoming man to usher in the kingdom of God, and bring about God’s salvation to all humans.
The question therefore, which often arises is, whether this message has taken root in our heart and transformed our lives spiritually, or whether Christmas is merely a 12-day extravaganza of drinking, dancing and merry making, as was done in earlier centuries to coincide wit the pagan Romans festival of the birth of the Sun.
We see such things happening even in some Christian countries, where secularism has taken a new twist and toll, undermining the true spirit and sanctity of the Christ event, with the removal of all Christian symbols, banning of nativity scenes and commercialising the season to bring about an X-mas without Christ.
Undoubtedly, we have strayed away from the path and true significance of this great event with our indulgence in worldly things. Putting back Christ into Christmas should therefore be the primary duty of every Christian if we wish to save the little that is left of the Christmas spirit and message.
