After banning the import and breeding of Rottweiler and Pitbull breeds of dogs in Goa and making the registration of such dogs with the Animal Husbandry Department mandatory, the ministry also plans vaccination and sterilisation of dogs. The move is an important step, as in Goa we can see many dogs on the roadside that are unattended. These stray dogs are not pets or adopted by anyone but are roadside dogs without any sterilisation and vaccination against diseases.
Many dog bite cases in Goa are reported, which can lead to rabies. The ministry may come out with a drive for dogs, which may be required to stop the growth in the dog population in the State. The ministry, with the help of the police and the veterinary department team, will do this free of charge for seven days.
The ministry started the drive in Colvale two days ago. It is a serious drive to prevent the disease and help control the stray dog population. Goa has seen an increase in stray dogs, and it is important to stop the breeding of dogs as they cause danger and nuisance on the roads. In cities like Panaji, Margao, and Vasco, there are groups of stray dogs on the roadside, which cause disturbances at night and attack too. Provision should be made to catch roadside stray dogs and vaccinate and sterilise them to avoid breeding.
