In the ongoing Assembly in Goa the question of not having paid the prize money to the winners of the Paralympics and National Games, which were held from 8th to 17th July 2023 (Paris) and 25th October to 9th November 2023 (Goa), respectively. Now the Sports Minister has assured on the floor of the House that the sports persons would be given the prize money before Ganesh Chaurthi.
This is like celebrating one’s birthday several months after the joyful day has passed. Does it take a year to identify, get approvals and honour the prize winners? This is sheer laxity on the part of the authorities needs to be condemned. When Cabinet notes are moved by hand and in double quick time for certain works, the same enthusiasm could have shown in this case.
If people in power punctually are paid their pay and perks, why cannot the sports persons who have worked hard, dipped into their savings for training and brought laurels to Goa and the country be given their rightful dues on time? The prize winners and volunteers need to be compensated by enhancing their rightful dues because of the wanton delay by the authorities.
