It has become a common trend among veteran politicians belonging to any political party to announce that if given the ticket it will be their “last election.
The questions that arise is do they actually mean it when they make such a statement? Will it be the last election if the politician becomes victorious at the polls? Should the desire to “retire” from politics be taken at face value by citizens? Or is it just a ploy to get the coveted party ticket.
It is true that many politicians have retired after losing an election. However some have made a comeback in electoral politics after a break.
After all, the voters could be the deciding factor on a politician’s political future. It is ultimately left to the party think-tank to determine whether a veteran politician should be given a ticket or not.
They will probably have to decide on the option of experience over inducing fresh blood. Be that as it may, probably the most important criteria that is taken into consideration in choosing a party candidate is the winnability factor. After all, an election is all about getting the numbers right.
