The Dev Bodageshwar Jatra at Mapusa began on January 2, 2026. Every year, a Giant Wheel and other amusement rides are set up for children and adults. This year, however, a local youth, Akhil, was denied permission even after installing the ride.
According to Akhil, the Mamlatdar asked him to get a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the temple committee. But the temple authorities told him that no NOC was required. He waited for clarity, but instead of being allowed to operate, the Giant Wheel was sealed.
On Sunday, another operator was allowed to run a similar ride after the seal was removed. This raises serious questions, as the seal was removed on a Sunday without any written order or official permission. Disappointed, Akhil decided to remove his Giant Wheel on his own.
He stated that he spent nearly Rs 2 lakh over five days on labour, accommodation, and food, but was still not allowed to operate. On Thursday, the seal was again removed by an unknown person, who later turned out to be a Talati.
The real issue here is the lack of clear rules and procedure for granting permission to operate such rides. The temple authorities and the Mamlatdar must clearly explain the process and make it simple for local operators. This appears to be a clear case of biased treatment against a local youth.
