A dangerous trend is emerging where notorious convicts such as Ram Rahim and Baba Asaram, jailed for serious crimes including rape and murder, are repeatedly granted parole. In one year alone, Ram Rahim received both 40 days of parole and 20 days of furlough, and has been released 15 times since 2017. In the past, even film stars were treated as if parole was their personal right. The Bitti Mohanty case, where the accused absconded for six years after parole, should be a warning. Parole is conditional freedom, not a privilege driven by political patronage.
