After the recent success of the Goa govt in implementing the digital fare meter system for taxis in Goa, there should be no looking back now or reneging on the recent assurances of Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, of bringing in app-based taxis in Goa in the next 3 months --- never mind the late realisation of Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho of the 'need to ensure cheap taxi fares for Goans and tourists'. It is not going to be a cake- walk for the Goa govt to effect the changeover by ringing out the old and ringing in the new , given the belligerence and challenges of the adamant taxi unions and the vote bank politics played by a few legislators with their tacit support to the disgruntled taxi operators. Secondly, we need to move the times, and can't afford to be left behind, when app-based taxi are well- accepted and popular in most Indian states and abroad. Tourism in Goa in recent years is also at a low ebb for several reasons -- one of them being, the exorbitant taxi fares charged by taxi operators.
