Carnival was always a much looked forward to occasion at people’s doorsteps. It was truly a traditional affair with open-air folk plays being a big draw for the old and the young alike. The village maands used to come alive during the three days of Carnival.
Local residents contributed to stage the plays. Unlike what is seen now, no donations came from politicians or sponsors. Today, the Carnival celebration is hijacked by the government to attract tourists. Under the guise of promoting culture, what we see is crass commercialisation. The winds have changed and so also has Carnival celebrations
