Growing up in the big city, it was a mother’sambition, and need to see her little girl up on stage that saw Chrystal takeher first steps towards an illustrious musical career. Born in Andheri, Mumbai,she soon relocated to the relatively sleepy state of Goa where her mother wasquick to ensure she was actively musically involved with her school choir inMargao.
Today, when she looks back on her 13 yearlong career, Chrystal laughs, “I can’t believe the path that has traversed somany genres has gotten me here.” This is nothing short of a true reflection ofher musical beginnings. Moving on from her days as a choir girl, she went on tobe spotted at performing at her alma mater during the Chowgule College inter-collegiatecompetition, ‘Panorama’. It was there that she was picked up for her next bigventure.
“I was the female crooner with one of Goa’stop bands, “The Big City Band” for five years. It was a period in my life thattook me across the country, and even internationally, to destinations such as Oman,Dubai, Muscat, and Kenya,” she recounts.
After half a decade, the local diva triedher hand at her next challenge. “Having made it as one of the final tenparticipants of the ‘Coke Channel [V] Pop Stars’ reality show in 2003 is one ofmy biggest achievements,” she says. But not making it to the final five,ensured that Chrystal’s career would take her even further. Returning to Goa,she started out the next step in her career as a solo artist.
Over the course of a couple of years, withthe experience she had already garnered under her belt, she teamed up withmusician/producer Colin D’Cruz, who is the man behind arranging and producingher two chart-topping hits. And he is not short of praise for her prodigioustalent either, stating “Chrystal’s recent success has been highlighted with hercompositions having received excellent response online.” He continues, “While ‘Bablu's Poem’ peakedat the number one position on the soundclick charts from over 41000 worldwideentries, ’Toro Loco‘ was number onein the genre of salsa from over 35000 entries.”
With plans to release a compilation of herassorted work in the second quarter of 2013, one cannot but wait to see what isyet to come from the versatile vocalist.
