The Goa government has been talking a lot about promoting religious tourism. I have no problem with this, as long as it follows the laws and rules of the State. It could also help boost Goa’s economy, which is a good thing. But at the same time, the government must also make sure Goa’s garbage problem doesn’t get worse. It should issue strict guidelines and carry out checks to ensure that waste is properly disposed of by event organisers and bus operators.
I have personally seen people throwing garbage from buses”both while the buses are moving and when they are parked. With so many buses bringing large numbers of people, imagine the amount of rubbish being dumped all over Goa. There’s a well-known saying: “Cleanliness is next to godliness.” Since senior ministers in Goa are showing so much interest in religious tourism, they should also ensure that it is kept clean and respectful. I hope the Chief Minister, Tourism Minister, Environment Minister, and Waste Management Minister take proper action.
