In a bid to prevent crime and help vulnerable groups cope with various threats it is learnt that the South Goa District Police launched its community policing initiative ‘Prayaas’. The various components of the initiative reportedly includes awareness on crime prevention, health checkups, drug de-addiction, career counselling and sporting events as a holistic approach to tackle criminal and nefarious activities. This is a very good initiative as a holistic approach is the need of the hour in order to prevent crime. There need to be effective prevention methods in order to provide a safe and secure environment for society and the people. It is important to evaluate crime prevention methods and its effectiveness in preventing recurring criminal offences. The technology used for prevention of crime needs to reach each and every citizen. Early education plays an important role in preventing crime. Hotspot areas of crime need to be identified and programmes should be focused on groups more likely to commit crimes. Cyberspace is a new domain for crimes. We need to address economic inequality as well which is one of the reasons for the rise in crimes.
