Goa is beset with power outages now owing to short supply from neighbouring states and power wastage through transmission and distribution losses is in the region of 25 per cent. Worse still a lot of electricity is criminally wasted by not switching off the streetlights during the daytime, especially in the coastal belt. High mast floodlights and intense LED streetlights consume humongous amounts of energy, but these are criminally on even at 8 am on beachfronts. Sensors should be installed on these fixtures to automatically switch them off at daybreak, this would not only increase the bulb life but also save electricity for a power-starved state.
