After the arrival of British in India, many foreign horses were brought to India and later captured the market like the British.
Naturally, our native horse was extremely neglected. Indian horses are known to conquer mountain valleys, rocky terrain, extreme weather and grasslands.
At that time many people used horses for traveling and there were Tongas in urban areas. But later, as the modes of transport changed, people began neglecting horses and switched to vehicles. As such, these animals had not takers and were left to the mercy of nature.
Today, things have changed again. With good infrastructure and training, horses seem to be gaining ground and people are taking interest in them. Presently, they are being used for racing and for bravery in various events.
Recently, a horse exhibition was held at the race-course ground in Pune where about 150 horses participated.
Trainers have also started training these animals which are sought by affluent people to be kept in their farm houses. The present rate of a well-trained horse is anything close to Rs 7 lakh. Soon, the horse may overtake the price of the car!.
