Don’t regularise illegal structures

Issuing house numbers to unauthorised dwelling houses will be a death trap. There are many illegal houses constructed without any permission from competent authorities, more so under panchayat jurisdictions.

These dwelling houses are rented out to migrants or non-Goans.

Most of these owners take the easy way out without going through all necessary registration processes and hence build illegal structures with the blessing of officials.

This also results in loss of revenue to the government. Other main causes of illegal constructions are poverty and urbanization.

Instead of demolishing these illegal and unauthorised houses, the government is issuing house numbers to them. This will have serious consequences and will set a precedent for others.

The panchayats should have a mechanism for preventing illegal constructions. They should oversee effective enforcement of applicable laws by the concerned officials.
