Despite the use of modern technology, including space technology, in road construction and planning, it is unfortunate that several roads in Goa fail to remain in good condition even for a year. Potholes have become a common sight, creating serious risks for motorists and pedestrians. During the monsoon, water-filled potholes make it difficult to judge their depth, resulting in accidents, injuries and, tragically, loss of lives.
The poor condition of roads raises questions about the quality and quantity of materials used for asphalting and possible negligence in the execution of works. Contractors responsible for substandard work should be held accountable and, where necessary, blacklisted. Any allegations of corruption or commissions must also be thoroughly investigated.
The government should urgently ensure that roads are safe, durable and motorable throughout the year. In cases of accidents caused by poorly maintained roads, the authorities and responsible contractors should consider providing full medical assistance to victims until recovery. Saving lives must be the priority.
