Having spent most of my life abroad and my command over Konkani not up to the mark, I found that one of the best places to improve the same is in the Goan markets. And pleasantly many non- Goans that I converse with at these places speak Konkani much better than me (not to mention many other Goans as well) However, it's strange (rather disturbing !) when I see many Goans fluent in Konkani, speaking Hindi with non-Goans, who can actually speak Konkani very well. Why can't we speak Konkani where possible? I respect other languages, but I think that it is high time that we start taking pride in our local language and identity, else it is possible that in the last generation we could see the same. To be blunt Konkani is the critical basis of Goa's identity.
