Goats are scapegoats in Maha as leopards thrive

The increasing intrusion of leopards into urban localities of Maharashtra has become a matter of serious concern and is rightly being addressed at the government level. One of the measures reportedly under consideration is the release of goats into forest areas to prevent leopards from straying into human settlements. Such experiments have already been attempted in certain regions. However, this proposal raises significant ethical and practical concerns. While goats may serve as natural prey for leopards, they are equally vulnerable to human exploitation. There is a real possibility that goats released for this purpose may be captured by non-vegetarians for consumption, thereby defeating the very objective of the initiative. In such circumstances, the issue of leopard intrusion would remain unresolved, while innocent animals would be sacrificed for no fault of their own. This not only questions the effectiveness of the strategy but also its humane intent. I therefore urge the authorities to reconsider this approach and explore alternative, sustainable, and humane measures to address the problem of human–leopard conflict.
