Stating that social gathering venues can become a hotspot for Covid-19, Dean of Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) said that marriage functions were the leading contributor in the recent marginal increase in Goa’s daily fresh Covid-19 cases. It is alleged that at many marriage functions people do not follow the SOPs like wearing the mask, maintaining social-distancing and frequent hand washing. It is warned that this could lead to a second wave of the deadly virus. It must be said that it may not always be possible to follow this protocol at the wedding receptions. People could be shaking hands while wishing one another. They could be standing in close proximity while talking as also while queuing up at the buffet table. It may not be possible to wear the mask at all times, especially while having drinks and eating from the buffet table. Washing hands at regular intervals is a far cry as the guests will need to head to the wash-room frequently. In order to stay free from the second wave of the infection it would be desirable to suspend all social gatherings and wedding reception till such time that there is no danger of a second wave. The wedding ceremony could be live-streamed on YouTube for the guests. Wedding invitations could mention the date and time of the live streaming so that friends and relatives receive the invitation card and do not feel left out.
