Data from the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has reportedly shown that the nature of roads is the cause of nearly a third of the accidents that occur in Goa.
Heavy rainfall makes the roads very dangerous due to the numerous potholes that develop as they are submerged in rain-water. It is almost impossible to gauge the depth of these water-filled craters.
It is learnt that as per the analysis of road accidents that took place in Goa made by the MoRTH, of 3,440 road accidents that took place in Goa in 2019, as many as 1,160 accidents occurred due to bad road conditions leading to 66 deaths.
Besides absence of potholes, proper road engineering also plays a vital role in preventing accidents. These include proper curvature of the road, proper road engineering at the road junctions, proper road-signs, speed-breakers, speed limits, etc.
It is learnt that weather plays a small part in the cause of road accidents since a majority of accidents occurred during clear weather conditions as compared to the rainy weather as per the data available.
