Goa is a world tourist destination. The tourist season has started and the tourism department has begun advertisements in national and western media welcoming tourists to visit Goa's beaches.
I was invited by my friend for an inauguration at Vagator beach. I took the route to Vagator via Anjuna Church. I was shocked to see the pathetic condition of the road at certain locations till you reach the beach full of big potholes. At the beach, tourists were enjoying and stray dogs were feasting on the left over garbage but tourist police and life guards were not in sight.
The Tourism minister boasts that to keep the image of the State as a tourist destination he has instructed the police to ensure the safety of tourists along the coastal belt and for the department to keep strict vigil on the tourist movement. It is learnt the tourism department has decided to procure 10 (Thar) Mahindra Vehicle for tourist police to man the beaches due to safety concerns. The tourism minister has visited accident-prone road in Porvorim and ordered to get it repaired. Likewise, he should visit the road from Anjuna church leading to beach and order potholes be repaired. It is useless to earn revenue for tourism industry and welcome tourists to Goa with a tottering infrastructure in place.
